It’s beginning to look like Christmas with festive holiday lights, and jungle bells playing to welcome the season. The scents of the sweet and hot spiciness of cinnamon along with fresh apples welcome visitors to our home.
Like many, I’m decorating our Christmas tree today. It always seems to brighten my holiday mood and gives our cats a chance to entertain themselves with decorations. Tookie especially likes swatting gold balls. By Christmas Eve, most of the ornaments will be at the top of the tree, out of his reach.

When I think about Christmas my thoughts naturally gravitate to family and celebrating the season with loved ones. The expectations this year is no different from the previous happy holidays before we heard the word COVID and understood the reasons for limiting social gatherings.
For most families, including mine, the present year has precluded family gatherings and the isolation and loss of loved ones have left an indescribable heartache and void in our lives.
The season has its difficulties at the best of times dealing with family issues, but the social restraints of living in today’s world added another dimension. Yet, to live on we must rely on the promise that our lives will improve and that we will adjust and overcome that which seeks to destroy us.
This year’s optimism for a semblance of normalcy is forefront in our minds and hearts. My wish is for you and yours to have a merry and jolly Christmas Day.

Autumn: A Transition Season
The annual seasonal changes are a reminder that nothing remains the same. Today, September 22nd at 3:20 pm EST is the autumnal equinox marking the first day of fall in the Northern Hemisphere. It’s an exciting time to breathe in the freshness of the crisp fall air and relax with a pumpkin spice latte while reading your favorite book.
What happens during the equinox?
The sun crosses the Earth’s equator at the time of the equinox, from the Northern Hemisphere into the Southern Hemisphere. During the autumnal equinox, day and night are balanced to about 12 hours each all across the world. The Earth’s tilt causes the change in season with the Northern Hemisphere beginning to feel the chill of fall after the warmth of summer.
Daylight in the Northern Hemisphere becomes shorter leading up to the winter solstice in December. The polar opposite happens in the Southern Hemisphere, where daylight will gradually grow longer until that hemisphere’s summer solstice in December.
